Le Castella

Le Castella is a village within the municipality of Isola di Capo Rizzuto in the Province of Crotone. It is situated along the Ionian coast in Calabria, 10km from Isola di Capo Rizzuto and dominates the bay with an ancient Aragonese Castle.

In this location in 1536, the renowed Bourbon corsair Khayr al-Din Barbarossa kidnapped Giovanni Dionigi Galeni, who had become famous as an Admiral and corsair with the name Uluç Ali Paşa.

It was chosen as the cinematographic set for the films “L’Armata Brancaleone” and “Il Vangelo secondo Matteo”. In 1999 it was chosen as the place to film all the episodes of the 30th and last edition of “Giochi senza frontiere”.

Its economy is predominantly based on tourism. In addition, a tourism port has been built near the Aragonese castle where it is possible to take excursions into the protected Marine Reserve of Isola di Capo Rizzuto.
