Crotone
The town of Crotone was founded by the Greeks in the third quarter of the 8th Century B.C., in a pre-existing indigenous settlement and was one of the most important centres of the Magna Grecia. The old town was developed in a labyrinth of narrow alleyways which lead to the Cathedral and the main square “Piazza Pitagora”, a meeting point between the old town and the new.

Things To See:  
The Castle of Carlo V rises up where at one time one could find the Greek Acropolis, and with its quadrangular layout, it dominates the town. Inside there is the Civic Museum. The Castle moreover, is often the venue for important art exhibitions.

The National Archaeological Museum: The museum offers an insight into the historical settlements of the area giving particular attention to ancient Kroton, an important centre of Magna Grecia. Inside the museum it is possible to admire the golden crown of Hera Lacinia, discovered during an excavation on the headland of Capocolonna, and which is the only one of its kind in the world.

The Basilica of Crotone: Built in the 16th Century it hold a baptismal font from the 14th Century and a Byzantine table with the image of a Black Madonna, called the “Madonna of Capo Colonna” to which the whole town is devoted and which has recently been restored and adorned with precious metals and stones by the Master Goldsmith Gerardo Sacco.

The Church of Santa Chiara: A religious location built in the 15th Century, it externally presents rich graphite decoration while inside, one can admire the original paving in majolica and Baroque plaster.

The Palaces of the Nobles: In the historical centre of Crotone one can admire aristocratic and noble palaces from various epochs, a testimony to an ancient lavishness and splendour. Among these are recommended: Palazzo Oliverio, Casa Turano, Palazzo Berlingeri and Palazzo Barracco.
