THE FORTRESS OF
LE CASTELLA

The fortress of Le Castella, probably of Magno-Greek origin, stands on a small peninsula jutting out into the sea of the Isola Capo Rizzuto Marine Reserve, “the only castle in Europe in the middle of the sea”.

It was not a permanent residence for nobles but rather a stronghold for defensive purposes with various military compartments, civil and religious buildings. It owes its current appearance to the Aragon family who, in the 15th century, changed its structure to intensify the efficiency of the defensive system of the Kingdom of Naples.

The Borgo of Santa Severina

Santa Severina, recognized as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, is an ancient medieval town nestled halfway between the Ionian Sea and the Sila mountains. Perched atop a rocky outcrop in the center of a vast valley, it appears like a grand stone ship dominating the landscape.

The area was inhabited by indigenous peoples during the Bronze and Iron Ages. Later, it came under Norman rule, a period during which the construction of the Castle of Santa Severina began, built upon the remains of a pre-existing Byzantine fortification.

The city of Crotone

In the city of Crotone, it’s worth exploring the old town, which unfolds from the square of the Castello di Carlo V—a state-owned fortress—surrounded by imposing noble palaces such as Palazzo Morelli, home to the Territorial Office of Crotone and the Sila branch of the Superintendency for Archaeological Heritage of Calabria, and the 18th-century Palazzo Barracco.

From here, a maze of narrow alleyways (locally known as vineddri or vichi) leads to numerous small squares framed by grand aristocratic buildings. On Via Risorgimento, you’ll find the National Archaeological Museum of Crotone. Continuing on, you’ll arrive at the Cathedral and the central Piazza Pitagora, which serves as a junction between the old and new parts of the city. La Pescheria is a charming and characteristic neighborhood within the historic center.
